I recently had the opportunity to photograph the very talented John Bell. John is a Scottish actor with an increasingly impressive resume - Dr. Who, A Shine of Rainbows, Battleship and now he plays Bain son of Bard in the Hobbit movies. So keep an eye out for him this December when the Desolation of Smaug is released!
John and his family came to me looking for new head shots for John after seeing some of the work I did with Mark Atkin, after meeting up with them for coffee we arranged to shoot at the house they had rented near Seatoun the following week. This made it nice and easy for them to fit into their schedule and meant that I only had to worry about getting myself to the location.
We shot a bunch of new head shots before getting into some more relaxed fun portraits. My aim was give John a good range of shots for the agents that represent him but also some stuff he could use for himself. Its always really good when you turn up to meet a client and they have ideas of their own ready to show you. This really does make it easier for me as a photographer because straight away I get an idea of things they like and dislike and it helps steer the ship of creativity throughout the shoot. Now John and his family has really done their homework, they had numerous books all with the pages bookmarked and a heap of photos on the their iPad all with interesting concepts that we could being to the mix. I don't think I have ever met a nicer family. They were very welcoming and a joy to work with and even though I only got to know them for a few weeks I was genuinely saddened when it was time for them to leave and head back to Scotland.
In the end though we got some great shots, John was easy to work with and not surprisingly he took direction well! Here's a small sample of shots from the day, over time I'm sure a few more will creep up in a few other places. Overall it was a pleasure working with John, keep an eye out for him he's definitely a rising star and one to watch.
